Deliberately Defaced: Anti-Blackness and Museum Institutions, Lecture

  • Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby, Ed.D. Academic Center, Auditorium & Lobby (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The first Atlanta University Center Art History + Curatorial Studies Distinguished Lecture of the academic year, Dr. Mia Bagneris will present, Deliberately Defaced: Anti-Blackness and Museum Institutions.

Exposing the shocking story of a duplicitous restorer, the knowing misrepresentation of an important object, the widespread circulation of a damaging and entirely fabricated narrative, and more than three decades of institutional cover-up, this talk analyzes the series of visual culture crimes to which Franz Fleischbein’s 1837 Portrait of a Free Woman of Color has been subject and considers similar examples like that of the Met’s recently acquired work, Bélizaire and the Frey Children(also 1837), in order to unveil the anti-Blackness ultimately at the foundation of conventional art historical inquiry and museum practice.

Service Learning Saturdays @ the Outdoor Activity Center (OAC)

This program facilitated by the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance and made possible by a grant from USDA Forest Service for our Atlanta Children’s Forest Network, provides the opportunity for youth 10 years and older to participate in meaningful activities encouraging conservation, stewardship and experiential learning on the second Saturday of every month (excluding January, July, and December).

Activities include trail building and maintenance, invasive plant eradication, habitat restoration and other activities needed to manage the facility and grounds of this unique urban resource!

**Farm Service Days are April through November.

Sign in and orientation will begin promptly at 10:00 AM. Youth and youthful volunteers can earn up to 3 hours of community service each month. All activities will be supervised by an adult coordinator. Activities occur at the Outdoor Activity Center unless another location is specified in advance of the upcoming date. The OAC is accessible via MARTA. If students from Atlanta Public School System, who require 75 community service hours to progress to the next grade level, participate each month they can amass about half of the required hours of service.
